GETTING SET UP
You can start with many of the same methods suggested on the "Make
It Happen" page of this site and as also noted in the book. And, I do believe, you may find a warm public
reception for the idea as well.
You will also find that, since it's not a partisan effort nor a religious
event, and it's not a commercial venture, you should be able to find some very good places to hold such a meeting. You
will find many school auditoriums available. You may find some public halls and convention areas available. Some
sports facilities might also be considered.
You should be able to obtain an area at no cost, or if this can't be
done, you may be able to gain a business sponsor or sponsors to help you out. There are all sorts of workable possibilities
for this.
THE EVENT
And what sort of program will you be setting up? Well, to begin
with, town meetings need a good master of ceremonies / moderator. Next, you will have to have an agenda outline.
You might consider having a series of "American Town Meetings,"
starting with one that will outline a number of concerns and problems, as presented by various guest speakers.
Each of these presentations should be followed by a request for audience participation, for additional ideas and the development
of community volunteers.
Some of these presentations might include such subjects as,...
* Developing ethics classes for secondary level
public schools.
* Correcting the breakdown in the American legal system.
* Dealing with violence and porn in our entertainment
media.
* Investigating the abuses of eminent domain.
* Cleaning up our political system.
* Protecting our borders.
* Reducing the massive government bureaucracy.
* Reestablishing good community communications.
And on and on the list could go.
Later town meetings can deal with one issue at a time. This
first meeting just helps to get the public informed and involved for the whole series.
